Brooks and I had planned on making a book to embrace Children’s Book Week, but now that we’ve experienced several days of sadness, we decided to make a book for MeMe, Todd’s mom. She lost her life companion this week, so we decided to make something that would help her smile again.
We only used materials we had around the house and our collective creativity. For this week’s Five Dollar Friday, I thought I would share how we made the book and how sweet it turned out. Your challenge is for you and your kiddos to make one for someone in your life who made need a lift of spirit.
Our Materials
- construction paper
- magazine
- photos
- markers
- finger paint
- hole puncher
- ribbon
- glue
- tape
Our Strategy
- We made a cover for our book with magazine letters, a photo of the boys, and one hand print from each of them.
- The inside pages consisted of artwork by Brooks, more hand prints and some scribbles from Case, and an interview with Brooks that we titled, “Advice from Brooks” (more on that in a minute).
- On the back cover, Brooks wrote his name, Case’s name, and all of the other letters he knows ( yes, it’s random, but that’s what he wanted to do).
- Lastly, we hole punched all of the pages and tied them together with ribbon.
I must share the “Advice from Brooks” page. I gave Brooks a prompt, and then he answered it on his own. His words are in quotes.
1). To make you smile: “Look at this book we made.”
2). To make you laugh: “Get someone to tickle you.”
3). To make you sleep well: “A nice, cozy bed.”
4). Eat these foods to be happy: “Chocolate.”
5). If you need to talk, call: “Your mommy.”
So stinkin’ cute.
