We often think of Colorado as the premier place to ski and snowboard. There is little that compares to the whiter powdery goodness of the snow out west. With that being said, many of us live on the east coast and it’s not a simple jaunt to travel across the country. The eastern part of the U.S. boasts a number of amazing ski resorts, such as Boston Mills and Brandywine Ski near Akron, OH.
Boston Mills and Brandywine Ski are a pair of sister ski resorts owned by Vail Resorts. The two locations opened independently in the 1960s and merged in the 1990s to form the complex that exists today. Boston Mills is the primary resort attracting more advanced skiers with its challenging slopes. Boston Mills is also home to live entertainment and several well-known popular events such as Carnival, a huge season-end hoopla featuring mogul competitions, costume contests, tricks/jumps competitions, music, beer events, and more.
A mile away sits Brandywine, which caters to the younger snowboarding/ski crowd. Brandywine features lovely, well-groomed runs suitable for skiers and boarders of all ages and skill levels. They often host college nights and offer late night hours on Friday and Saturday, staying open until 1 a.m. Brandywine also has a popular tubing park called Polar Blast that features 20 lanes and stretches over “three football fields.”
For novice enthusiasts, the resort encourages visitors to take some type of lesson. They offer group lessons, individual lessons, boot camps and a kids’ academy. If you’re staying for multiple days, the suggestion is to spend the first day learning and the rest of your trip having fun on the slopes.
I’ve finally gotten both boys on the slopes this season. Whether it’s at Boston Mills/Brandywine or another mountain, I want winter sports to always be part of the boys’ lives and something they can pass down to their own families. During a time of year when snow and cold temperatures can put a damper on the spirits, flying down a mountain with the wind of your face can be just the therapy a person needs.
