As I’m sure you know, it’s vitally important to have a metaphorical sack of rainy day activities so you don’t get stuck with little ones chasing each other around with the broom and mop or stomach sliding down the stairs until someone gets seriously injured.
Our boys absolutely loves art projects, and I’ve found one that he never seems to tire of. How can he when this activity involves movement, paint, noise, and bragging rights? His preschool teacher first introduced him to marble rolling. He then came home and gave me a four-year old’s explanation of how to do it. I’m not sure if we roll the same way as his teacher, but below is our version of marble rolling.
It’s fun. It’s easy. It’s cheap. And when we’re battling spring showers and summer thunderstorms, it’s a blessing.
Supplies
Marbles (or beads, dice may even work)
Paint (any kind you can pour into a little cup)
Old medicine measuring cups (or Dixie cups)
Large paper (or multiple pieces of 8 x 11)
Pizza box (you can even use a shoe box, but the piece of paper would need to be smaller)
Steps
Cut paper so it fits snug in the pizza box (any color your child prefers)
Put one marble in each cup (one cup for each color; how many colors is up to you and your tot)
Pour just enough paint to cover the marbles
Wiggle the cups around until the marbles are completely covered
Dump marbles into pizza box
Completely close box
Let your child shake the box to his or her heart’s content (this is Brooks’s favorite part)
Open the box, and voila!
This is a fabulous idea!! I may use it to make artwork for our Family Room! Great rainy day art project!
I was thinking the same thing! Sometimes our children’s artwork is much more creative than anything we can buy.
