Let’s be honest here. I’m not one of those mom bloggers who can create a pinwheel out of toilet paper and a Popsicle stick or one who can effortlessly whip up a five-star meal, or whip up one at all, for that matter. So when I find a craft or recipe that I can actually achieve in the chaos of my life, I must share.
If you don’t do so already, start saving empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls. Not only are they great imaginary telescopes, swords, and bull horns, but they come in handy when it’s craft time.
You should already have most of the supplies you need for this Halloween craft except possibly the paint. Below are the supplies as well as instructions. Have fun!
Supplies
Only the first four supplies are required to make the monsters. The others are items we already had around the house.
- Toilet paper/paper towel rolls
- Paint (do not use water color)
- Paint brushes or sponge brushes
- Tape
- Scissors
- Markers/Sharpies
- Googlie eyes
- Pipe cleaners
- Sequins
- Ribbon
- Glue
Directions
First, paint the toilet paper or paper towel roll. We use Craft Smart paint because it’s inexpensive and works on a variety of surfaces. You can find it at Michaels and other craft stores for less than $1 per bottle. Do not use water colors; they do not show up well. Also, we like sponge brushes because they’re easy to hold and cover a lot of surface area with one stroke.
Once the paint has completely dried, fold down the top of the roll as shown in the photo below. This gives the monster the appearance of horns. You can use a piece of tape for extra security, but it typically stays folded down on its own.
To insert the arms, poke a hole in each side of the roll with scissors or an ice pick, stick the pipe cleaners in, then fold down on the inside so they won’t slide out. Lastly, let your children use materials of their choice to decorate and have fun. Happy Halloween!
I originally posted this craft as a guest post on Mom it Forward.

Aww, these are too cute! Plus, I have tons of toilet paper rolls around, but nobody to make the crafts with. Maybe I could donate them? LOL

Best looking monsters ever! They are so adorable.
We have a bag in the basement to save toilet paper rolls, paper towel holders and wrapping paper tubes. During the winter here in MI we do a lot of crafts because it gets too cold to go outside sometimes.
These crafts are too cute!! I love doing cute DIY crafty projects for the holidays!
