Even though it felt more like late winter than late spring yesterday, we still ventured to the Biltmore Estate to experience Spring at Biltmore. My husband’s family was in town, and we had been planning the trip for months, so we were not going to let a little chilly dampness stop us! It ended up being a wonderful day. It never rained and the temperatures made it less crowded which is always helpful when little ones are in tow.
We’ve visited the estate during Christmas, but it’s been a long time since I have seen the beautiful flowers of the gardens when they’re in full bloom. I was in awe yesterday as we meandered through the intricately designed gardens outside of the house. I felt like I was transferred to the early 1900s when architects and landscape architects focused on the smallest details and used the finest of materials.
The famous American landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, designed the gardens. He also designed Central Park. The similarities are really astounding. Olmsted designed both locales to feel so natural, it doesn’t even seem like you’re in a ‘garden’ or a ‘park’. Designing the landscape aspect of George Vanderbilt’s estate was Olmsted’s last great project before he died.
I can just envision Cornelia Vanderbilt, the Vanderbilt’s only child, walking the family dog, Cedric, through the Japanese Maples and rose bushes.
I could keep writing, but I feel like the pictures I took yesterday speak louder than my words. If you’ve never visited Biltmore when the gardens are in full glory, it’s so worth the trip.
Absolutely lovely. It reminds me of the Newport mansions we have up here in Newport, RI. The Vanderbilt’s had these huge summer homes similar to that up here where they summered back in the Gilded age!
Wow! They sure did live well and splendidly. I would love to have been a guest at one of their weekend parties.
We adore the Biltmore. It is always well worth the money we pay for the year passes. Many of our fondest memories have been made at Biltmore.
I agree! Season passes are truly worth it. So many events throughout the holidays and seasons.
I lived in NC for the first 12 years of my life and I visit my home state frequently. It is insane that I have never been to Biltmore!
Biltmore is one place I would truly love to visit. It is so beautiful. I’ve never seen a photo of it candid or professional that didn’t scream “come visit!”
I haven’t been here in years. Biltmore is SO gorgeous. We have Chateau Elan down here which is akin, but not the same.
Absolutely stunning! Would love to visit one day.
So gorgeous! I love visiting historical sites like that!
I have this on my list next time I go that way. This looks awesome. Nice Pics.
I’ve been to Asheville a few times and have yet to see the estate. I sure hope to do that this year when I’m there!
These images look so beautiful. The area looks so calming and relaxing. I could just sit and meditate!
It is very meditative! I am secretly hoping to go back alone with some coffee and a book to sit in the gardens and relax.
This is on my to-do list. What breathtaking scenery!
I love Biltmore in the spring! (And in the fall. And at Christmas. I love Biltmore.) You must have just missed me – I ran the 15k yesterday morning!
I know! We heard all about it from our shuttle driver. I would love to run it next year. My time would be terrible, but it would be worth it to run on the estate.
Just beautiful! I would love to walk the grounds and see all of the lovely gardens and architecture!
The lilypads are beautiful. I love the gardens.
That is just gorgeous. We have a couple of Vanderbilt mansions here on Long Island. They are just amazing!
They were originally from New York. I would like to see the summer homes as well. Very intriguing family!
I hate that I missed visiting this place the last time I was in Asheville. It looks beautiful!
This place looks gorgeous! It’d definitely be a great place to take a stroll through on a sunny spring day 🙂

It’s so beautiful there! I’ve only been to the Biltmore once.
we have an old estate (not near the biltmore size) nearby and they have amazing gardens on the grounds .not to this scale but gorgeous nonetheless. i’d be at the biltmore often if i lived near!
It’s amazing what our former counterparts did with their gardens and grounds. I can barely manage a few rosebushes and our small garden. Sigh…
What an amazing place! I love all of your photos. You did a great job capturing the grounds!
You’re right, words cannot express how simply gorgeous that estate really is! I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the pictures you took-hopefully one day I’ll be able to visit myself 🙂
How beautiful! can only imagine what it would be like to get married there!
How beautiful! Do they allow you to go inside and tour that as well?
Looks like a great place to visit. I am glad you and your family was able to enjoy it.

Wowzers!!! That place is beyond gorgeous! I could definitely spend hours there. I’d love to have been at some of the lush parties.
I love to visit places like this too. So much care goes into the gardens and those places just feel nice.
We went there once when I was younger! I would love to take my son. It’s so Gatsby! 🙂
Yes, it is! I love when people use “Gatsby” as an adjective.
I’ve never been there. I’d love to go on a couples get away with my hubby there though. It looks awesome.
