Now that school is in full swing, life is back to being crazy and sometimes when everything else in a mom’s life is hectic and overbooked, exercise gets pushed to the back burner. In fact, last week was so all over the place, I didn’t work out once (other than running around from one event, job or meeting to another). It gnawed at me the entire week and I did not like it. Both my body and mood needed several great workouts or runs. My plan for this week is much different.
I’ve been into fitness hot and heavy for almost two years. Whether interval training or running, I typically work out five days a week. And after some reflection, I’ve decided that when I do several simple things, working out is much easier and happens more often.
1. Always carry a water bottle.
I’ve been carrying a water bottle with me for a very long time. I think it’s actually made my body addicted to water. If I don’t have water with me all of the time, I literally get a parched mouth. When I feel dehydrated or thirsty, the last thing I want to do is workout. Further, sometimes when I feel thirsty, it also makes me hungry and I certainly don’t feel like exercising eating something. Being well-hydrated is integral to maintaining a healthy weight, ensuring proper digestion and warding off headaches. If you’re not already, start carrying water with you wherever you go.
2. Keep a packed gym bag in the car.
There are random times throughout the day that I could fit in a quick workout, but often I don’t have any workout clothes. I decided this was a ridiculous reason to miss a good workout. Now, I try to keep a gym bag in my car, especially on days when I’m running around and feel like I may be able to go to the gym or run a couple of miles. Also, if you plan to go to the gym or a workout class after work, the gym bag is a great reminder to get your booty in gear and actually carry out your plan. If you have to go home to change, you may never leave again.
3. Keep EAS® Whey Protein Powder Packets in your gym bag.
I use protein powder in a number of ways. Our mornings are crazy around here, so I often make a quick smoothie before heading out the door. I also drink protein shakes after working out, especially after weight training or interval training. I don’t do Crossfit per se, but if you do, protein shakes would be perfect to drink after those workouts. I even sometimes drink them after running because I’m often hungry after a great run but don’t feel like eating a meal.
Target has made drinking protein shakes easier than ever. EAS® has always been a reputable company when it comes to protein powder, but only recently have they created on-the-go packets. These packets are single-serve sizes, so they are perfect to throw in your gym bag and drink immediately after working out. Just add one packet to 8-10 oz of water in a shaker bottle and shake it until it blends. Simple as can be! They are also great to take with you when you travel, much easier than packing an awkwardly-shaped tub of powder. My favorite products are the EAS® 100%Whey Single Serve Packets and the EAS® Lean 15 Single Serve Packets.
4. Maintain a healthy diet.
While protein shakes are great for you after a workout or to mix as part of a smoothie, it’s also extremely important that you eat healthy foods at all other times of the day. If you workout or run often, it’s essential that you eat potassium-rich foods such as legumes, yogurt, bananas and sweet potatoes. Eating whole foods is also imperative. I like to think of food as fuel for the body. We wouldn’t put wax or slime in our cars for them to run, so why put processed foods or sugary drinks in our bodies? Eat foods rich in vitamins, nutrients, protein and complex carbohydrates. Your body will love you forever for it.
5. Celebrate even the smallest successes.
We are moms. Our lives are crazy and full of activity, so we need to pat ourselves on the back for even the smallest of successes when it comes to exercising. Whether walking 30 minutes every day at lunch with a co-worker or doing a 20 minute interval training session in your kitchen while the baby naps or taking a quick run around your neighborhood, congratulate yourself! If you worked out once last week and twice the next week, that is awesome. Find the time to exercise, even if it’s a very brief time period and reward yourself for doing so. As you get used to it, you begin to see the benefits to your body and your life, then you begin to make the time for it. And when you finish a good workout, drink a delicious protein shake to help your body repair.
I’m loving the new single-serve products from EAS® and support the #DoMoreWithEAS campaign because I believe that when the body is nourished, healthy and rested, working out can easily become a part of a mom’s everyday routine. If you’re interested in using EAS® Protein Packets to make your life easier, travel to your closest Target and head to the pharmacy aisle. There you will find the 100% Whey Single Serving Packets, the Lean 15 Single Serve Packets and a number of other EAS® products to meet your needs.
Being a mom is the most important job in the world to me, but to be the best mom I can, I have to take care of my body. I’ll leave you with this quick video showing how simple and easy it is to make a protein shake. I will also leave you with the question, how can you do more with EAS® to make your life healthier and more fulfilling?
Great tips! I totally agree on the water thing and keeping your workout gear handy. You have to make it easy for yourself!
Maintaining a healthy diet is absolutely the toughest. There are so many yummy things out there tempting us!
I love your idea of keeping a packed gym bag in the car – you are so right, not having clothes is no reason to miss a workout! I have not seen the EAS products, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for them now!
These are awesome tips. Keeping a gym bag in the car is definitely a great idea.
These are great tips! I love that EAS is at Target- being able to grab my protein mix and diapers is kind of awesome!
So true! Target is basically amazing.
Great tips! Can you believe I sometimes forget my water bottle? It’s the pitts. I’ve had to stop some runs early because of it too!
These are some great workout tips for moms on the go. It can be hard finding time to work out when you are so busy.
I totally agree with always having a water bottle with you at all times. Sadly, I do not have a regular exercise routine but I do watch my diet and do some walking whenever I can. I will check out this Eas Whey Protein powder too.
Healthy diet? I gotta get back to that and quick! I like that these are in single serve packets-there are times I am out and about that I forget to eat lunch–just water and a bottle and I’d be set and hopefully would not reach for a candy bar or a couple of cookies.
Yes, protein shakes definitely help ward off the temptation to snack on less healthy items.
Awesome tips!! Loving these new travel size packets. #client
Your suggestion “keep a packed gym bag in the car” is pretty smart. I often think I’ll go for a walk after work. By the time I get home to change shoes the desire has left me. The couch or one od my children wins me over!
