As a North Carolinian by birth, I can think of a thousand reasons to love this state. North Carolina is unique from others in that we have three geographical regions, which include the mountains, piedmont and coastal region. While I live in the beautiful mountains, I’ve spent my life traveling to the the Carolina coast. One of the most stunning and enjoyable coastal towns is Wilmington, N.C. If you’re considering traveling to this amazing place, here are five top reasons you should buy that plane ticket or put pedal to the metal right now.
5 REASONS TO TRAVEL TO WILMINGTON, N.C.
1). History: Whether you’re in downtown or on the water, you’ll catch a glimpse of Wilmington’s historical significance. This influential port city has experienced its fair share of tragedies and triumphs. It has stood strong amidst multiple wars including the Revolutionary War, Civil War and WWII. On the waterfront, viewers can see the The Battleship North Carolina which is a reminder of Wilmington’s role in the second World War. This ship is credited with 15 battle stars and honors more than 10,000 North Carolina men and women who died defending America’s freedom.
2). The riverfront: There’s something rejuvenating about sauntering along the Cape Fear River. It conjures feelings of nostalgia and a connection with those who walked those beaten cobblestones before us. With live music, shopping, sidewalk artists and delicious dining options, you can’t go wrong spending a day or evening along the riverfront.
3). Fun downtown vibe: Wilmington has an excellent dining and shopping scene. The lovely historical buildings have been well cared for and/or renovated, creating a vibe of modern day style and amenities situated amid historic beauty. I’m getting a little old for a wild nightlife, but if you’re young, the city offers many fun bars and clubs as well.
4). Proximity to the ocean: Wrightsville Beach is a short 20 min. drive from downtown Wilmington. I love both the seashore and the city, so you can’t go wrong when you can get both in one vacation. And with kiddos in tow, they can get bored hanging out in town for days on end. Playing at the ocean and in the sand helps them burn off some energy while mommy can relax and reset.
5). Kid-friendly activities: If your trip to Wilmington involves young children, you’ll want to schedule several structured activities that will be fun for them. This city offers plenty in regard to family fun. Some of the top kid-friendly attractions include the Children’s Museum of Wilmington, Fort Fisher State Historic Park, Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park, Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, and so much more. While Wilmington is sometimes considered a town favored by college kids and adults, there’s is plenty to do for travelers of all ages.
The photo below is a throwback shot from a previous trip to Wilmington when my boys (now 10 and 8) were just little tots.
Whether you’re a North Carolinian or not, you’ll enjoy your time in Wilmington. It’s a beautiful city with an eclectic scene and plenty to do for family members of all ages. Enjoy!
