Movies and food have always been an integral part of my holiday experience. I have a collection of movies that I must watch between Thanksgiving and Christmas, or else I feel as if I’ve missed something. Without the Griswolds, F-R-A-G-I-L-E, the Brits of Love Actually, and “every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings”, the holidays just don’t feel the same. If I don’t eat turkey, my mom’s homemade dressing, my husband’s chocolate peanut butter balls, and pumpkin pie at some point before New Year’s, I feel slighted.

I have been a fan of Netflix for quite some time. In college, my roommates and I went through the VHS/DVD phase where we had both tapes and DVDs that took up entirely too much space in our dorm rooms and apartments. Then as a young adult, my husband and I had baskets and shelves full of DVDs that really looked quite tacky beside the cute decor of our living room.

Further, driving all the way to the movie store to find a limited selection was so annoying. When the red envelopes started showing up in the mailbox, we were thrilled. It was such a great system, until streaming that is, which is even better than the red envelopes! I love the convenience of streaming as well as the lack of DVD/Blu-Ray cases cluttering up my house. With streaming, we can watch whatever we want whenever we want, which is very cool.

We recently moved into a new home with an open floor plan where the living room, dining room, and kitchen encompass one open space. This allows us to have a favorite show or movie on in the background as we dine, chat, and spend time together. We don’t watch a lot of regular television because of commercials and inappropriate content for our children. That’s why we enjoy Netflix.

Along with great flicks for the holidays, families need delicious dishes. Many families enjoy using an iPad to stream favorite movies or shows as they cook during November and December.

One absolutely delicious recipe which would be great to pair with a favorite show or movie is Freddy’s Sticky Saucy Ribs, originally created by award-winning chef, Curtis Stone. With a homemade rub and a homemade sauce, it even pleases this North Carolina girl’s palette. It’s a great recipe for a Saturday or a holiday when you can enjoy a movie or show as your ribs marinate and cook.

Freddy’s Sticky Saucy Ribs

Serves: 8

Prep Time: 5 hours (includes marinating time)

Cook Time: 4 1/2  hours (for barbecued ribs) or 2 1/2 hours (for oven-baked ribs)


4 packs baby back rib (2 1/2 pound each)

BBQ Sauce

2 tablespoons canola oil

1 yellow onion, chopped

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 cup whiskey

1 1/4 cups cider vinegar

2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth

1 1/2 cups ketchup

1 cup honey

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons yellow mustard

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1). In a large saucepan, heat

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring often, for about 5 minutes, or until tender. Stir in the garlic and cook for about 3 minutes, or until the garlic is tender.
  2. Stir in the paprika, then stir in the whisky and vinegar, bring just to a simmer, and simmer for 3 minutes. Stir in the broth, ketchup, honey, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, black pepper, and cayenne. Bring the sauce to a simmer over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered, stirring often to prevent scorching, for about 30 minutes, or until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly. Remove from the heat.
  3. The sauce can be make up to 2 weeks ahead, cooled, and covered in the fridge. A mason jar works great for the sauce. Reheat before using.

Spice Rub

1/4 cup packed light brown sugar

3 tablespoons sweet paprika

2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

*Make the spice rub the day before you plan to make the ribs.



  • Place ribs on 2 large baking sheets and rub all over with the spice mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours.
  • Position the racks in the center and upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 375°F. Cover the ribs on the baking sheets with foil. Bake the ribs, rotating the baking sheets and basting the ribs after the first 45 minutes, and recovering them with foil, for 1 1/2 hours, or until the ribs are tender and the meat has shrunk from the ends of the bones.
  • Uncover the ribs, baste them with the barbecue sauce and continue baking for 10 minutes, brushing them lightly with the barbecue sauce every few minutes or so, allowing the sauce to set before applying the next coat.
  • Using a large sharp knife, cut the racks into individual ribs. Arrange the ribs on a platter and serve with the remaining sauce on the side.

These ribs are absolutely scrumptious! Nothing can beat this rub and sauce. As you fill your own kitchen with the smells of the holidays, what Netflix favorite shows and movies will you be sure to watch?

    I love Netflix! It’s not only great for movies, but also for catching up on previous seasons of shows I started watching late. I swear all the time I will make time to start watching Breaking Bad too so I can see what all the hype is about.

    PS…I bet if you wrapped that pretty sauce filled jar in bubble wrap it would ship pretty well to GA! Hint Hint hahahaha

      Yes, come over! The sauce will be fresh for two weeks, so we need to cook up some ribs before then.
