I am so honored to be part of the Macy’s Heart of Haiti campaign. This campaign is very near and dear to my heart as it simultaneously celebrates artists and helps those in need. This one-of-a-kind campaign began after the earthquake of January 12, 2010. Despite the devastation, the folks at Macy’s realized there was an entire artistic community in Haiti who wanted to share their talents and products with the world. To date, handcrafted products from 400 Haitian artists are for sale at Macys.com and in certain Macy’s stores across the country.
The artists of Haiti believe in the trade-not-aid mentality. They want to offer their skills and products to garner a sustainable income instead of merely receiving funds. This says a lot to me about the people of this country. They are proud and talented, and they want the world to know it. Every item created by the Haitian artists is handmade. These beautiful and unique pieces are made with scraps and materials the artists have around them.
When one artist is hired in Haiti, the entire community benefits. When 500 Haitian artists are employed, over 3,000 members of their extended family benefit. To me, this is such an altruistic and organic way to stimulate the economy and foster passion in an otherwise devastated country. When Americans buy the Heart of Haiti items, we’re giving back to the Haitian people and rewarding skilled artists.
Below is a short video highlighting the amazing artistic talent and process offered by this wonderful community.
As part of this campaign, I received this stunning serving tray handcrafted out of recycled oil drums. It is even more beautiful in person, and it’s signed by the artist which makes it so special. I’m hosting a baby-shower this weekend, and we’re hosting a Thanksgiving dinner here the weekend after Thanksgiving, so I can’t wait to use this tray and tell my guests of its significance.
As Thanksgiving approaches and I’m reminded of those less fortunate, like the citizens of Haiti, the people and things for which I’m thankful are brought forefront in my mind. I’ve never had to worry about having enough fresh water for myself and my children. I’ve never had to walk miles and miles to school or work.
We Americans have everything in abundance. Abundant food, money, material items, educational opportunities, vaccinations and the list goes on. Sometimes it’s overwhelming to stop and consider just how much we have compared to other nations. My middle-class home would be a mansion to many around the world.
Despite the luxuries in my life, I’m most thankful for the people who brighten my spirits every day and touch my soul. Nothing in this entire world makes me smile like the faces of my two little boys. When they give hugs or say ‘I love you’ or tell me I’m pretty or giggle, I simply melt. They are my heart walking around on earth, and I’m so very thankful I get to be their mommy.
My husband helps tirelessly with household chores so that I don’t have them waiting for me once I’m finished with work and wrangling the boys. He’s an amazing dad who is willing to help with the boys when I have weird work schedules or meetings outside of regular hours. He and I both love to go and do, so our boys are never bored. Our family agenda is always packed.
My world could not function as it does without my sweet mom. Despite the fact that she’s been battling cancer for the past two years, she comes anytime I need her to help with my children so that I can work or do something fun. Some weeks, she’s picking up my toddler or watching both boys three to four times. If it wasn’t for her, I couldn’t work the type of schedule I do or ever do anything outside the norm.
And what would I do without my friends? I could not survive. I know so many amazing and smart women. My sister, my colleagues, my mom friends, my fitness friends, my childhood friends and my blogging friends. I have different things in common with each of them, but the bottom line is we’re all women. We’re all strong, and we’re all there for one another. With any problem I’m having, they know the advice to give and the words to say to make me feel better.
Even though it’s the season of Thanksgiving, we need to stop and consider how lucky we are during all times of the year. What are you thankful for?
As you are buying Christmas gifts, consider buying a beautiful item through the Heart of Haiti campaign. Not only will the recipient adore the gift, but you will be supporting artists thousands of miles away. How awesome is that?

You’re absolutely right. I take what I have for granted way too often. I need to take time and realize how lucky I am for my life and all the blessings I have.

I hadn’t heard of this campaign until now. I take things for granted a well, but this week I’ve hit a lot of barriers that have forced me to stop and see the small things I need to be grateful for.

What a beautiful tray from Heart of Haiti artists. It’s amazing what recycling and upcycling can bring about. Thanksgiving is always a wonderful time to reflect on the good in our lives and the good things we can do for others.

I love their thought process. So many take advantage of handouts these days, it’s refreshing to see people who would much rather work for their money! I am going to check out these artists’ creations when holiday shopping this year!

That tray is beautiful. I love supporting projects like this, where I can see where my money will be going instead of donating to a charity and never having any idea if the money actually gets to people who need it.
